You can’t always expect an ex to go to bat for you, not when blood feuds are being waged from talk-show couches in two continents. Kim Cattrall just learned this, unfortunately, in the ongoing war over Sex and the City 3: Jason Lewis—also known as Smith Jerrod, who Cattrall’s character, Samantha Jones, turned from an actor-slash-waiter into the Absolut Hunk megastar—is not supporting her in her feud with Sarah Jessica Parker.
A refresher: After the news came out that Sex and the City 3 was officially not happening, and rumors swirled again that Cattrall had been the cause of the stalemate, Cattrall decided to wage a scorched-earth campaign on SJP’s “nice girl” brand. After the death of Cattrall’s brother, Cattrall thanked castmate Cynthia Nixon for reaching out with condolences before calling out SJP explicitly for what she characterized as duplicitous behavior: “I don’t need your love or support at this tragic time,” she wrote on Instagram. “Your continuous reaching out is a painful reminder of how cruel you really were then and now. Let me make this VERY clear. (If I haven’t already) You are not my family. You are not my friend. So I’m writing to tell you one last time to stop exploiting our tragedy in order to restore your ‘nice girl’ persona.”
In an appearance on local Los Angeles news station KTLA 5 on Wednesday, Lewis was asked to weigh in about the war of words. At first, Lewis was diplomatic, saying, “If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all." But when pressed, he added, “Listen, I would have to say that Sarah was always just so lovely and such a consummate professional, and I think that people should remember their graciousness and the things that have been given to them, and I’m going to stop there because I’ve got nothing good to say.”
When asked to clarify if that meant he was on “Team Sarah,” Lewis delivered the ultimate betrayal: “I might just have to say yeah. What a gracious lady; she was always so good to me.” When asked about other cast members, Lewis declined to namecheck his former on-screen partner, repeating that Parker was “amazing.” Parker, for her part, told People that “there was no fight; it was completely fabricated, because I actually never responded,” referring to an interview that Cattrall gave to Piers Morgan where she said the two were never friends. “And I won’t, because she needed to say what she needed to say, and that is her privilege.”
Fortunately for us, while there may not be a third Sex and the City movie, the franchise refuses to die as the stars continue to drag its rotting corpse out into the open. And for anyone hoping for a Jelena moment for Cattrall and Lewis—it looks like that’s never going to happen.
