Comedian Andy Richter on Friday tweeted out a defense of his penchant for angrily denouncing Donald Trump on his Twitter account, at one point writing, “you endanger democracy, we take away your jokes.”

The longtime Conan O’Brien sidekick began shortly before 9:30 a.m. Friday, saying, “Remember when I used to tweet stuff like this?” and linking to an offbeat May 27, 2014, quip which reads, “Had to punch my way out of a Hallmark store again.”

“Have a hunch that every person whining about comedians tweeting politics either didn’t vote or voted for Trump,” Mr. Richter wrote minutes later. “So you do this to yourself.”

“It’s pretty simple; you endanger democracy, we take away your jokes,” he concluded his tweet storm.

While some followers approved of Mr. Richter’s musings, others told the veteran jokester he needs to lighten up.

“lmao wow no one cares about your jokes that much, and you are biting off your nose to spite your face here, it’s a bad look,” wrote a follower from New York.

Another Twitter user urged Mr. Richter to take a long view: “The nation will endure. It has endured many, many, many blustering idiots before, and will endure many more.”
