Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we’re counting down our picks for the most intense moments of physical harm that “Simpsons” characters have endured. Some minor spoilers are ahead. Is there a time where a character’s been put through the ringer that we missed? Let your voice be heard in the comments!

#10: A Park Ranger Loses Their Hand

“Bart to the Future”
When killer insects take over Larval Lake, a park ranger warns the Simpson family to turn back. While Homer is less than enthusiastic about driving away, they eventually leave. That’s probably for the best because not long after, a swarm of the bugs latch onto the ranger’s hand and go to town. Seeing them reduce the ranger’s hand to just bone within mere seconds is a gnarly visual. We have a feeling that pest control’s going to need a lot of bug repellent to put these guys down for good.

#9: Lenny Keeps the Change

“Monty Can't Buy Me Love”
While trying to boost his reputation, Mr. Burns decides to shower Springfield with cash to gain the people’s favor. But if you’re trying to make it rain, it’s probably better to use light dollar bills and not heavy coins. As the coins descend from the rooftops, one plunges directly into Lenny’s forehead. When Carl takes it out, blood spews out from him like he’s a human water fountain. It’s an uncomfortable sight to see and now we’re kind of afraid of loose change. These are some pennies not worth pinching.

#8: Martin Falls off a Cliff

Top 10 Moments That Made Us Love Martin Short

“Dial 'N' for Nerder”
Things took a turn for the worst when Lisa and Bart think they’ve killed Martin. In “Dial ‘N’ for Nerder”, Bart pulls a prank on him while at the Springfield National Park but it stops being funny pretty quickly when Martin falls off a cliff and presumably to his death. It’s not only a violent moment but also an incredibly dark chapter in Bart and Lisa’s lives. Because following this, the siblings try to cover up what happened. Martin actually ended up surviving the incident but this was no doubt a traumatic experience for all involved.

#7: Homer Dreams of Killing His Father

Also in:

Top 10 Hilarious Homer Simpson Moments

“Papa Don't Leech”
While Grandpa and Homer are driving at night, a distracted Grandpa is sideswiped by Patty and Selma causing the car to go off the road. It leaves Abe seriously injured, but instead of helping his father or calling 911, Homer instead takes the opportunity to smother him to death. It’s revealed to just be a dream sequence but Homer’s desire to kill his own dad is deeply disturbing. We’ve all had stressful times dealing with family members, but imagining killing your father is pretty messed up. Let’s hope Homer doesn’t let these intrusive thoughts win!

#6: Homer’s Face Melts

Also in:

Top 10 Sweetest Homer & Marge Simpson Moments

“Brother from the Same Planet”
Homer is extremely late in picking up Bart from soccer practice. When he finally shows up, Bart is understandably furious. As a way to make up for his lateness Homer presents Bart with ice cream only for it to end up on Bart’s head. Homer explains that they should both move on from what happened. Of course, this approach does nothing to quell Bart’s anger who invisions his father in a hellish type landscape complete with Homer’s face melting. It might’ve just been Bart’s imagination, but that image is never not going to be spine-tinglingly creepy

#5: Maude Flanders’ Death

“Alone Again, Natura-Diddily”
Ned Flanders was forced to bid farewell to his wife, Maude, when she died in the episode “Alone Again, Natura-Diddily”. She met her untimely end when t-shirts shot out of shirt cannons meant for Homer accidentally collided with her. The blast sent her over the bleachers where she fell to her death. It certainly was an unexpected motion of events but it’s made worse by the fact that Homer was parked in the ambulance zone preventing paramedics from possibly being able to save her life. One thing’s for sure though: death by t-shirt cannon is not how anyone should want to go out.

#4: Hans Moleman Gets His Skull Drilled

“Team Homer”
While sniffing ether, Mr. Burns agrees to sponsor Homer’s bowling team. Surprised by his boss’ generosity, Homer announces to his co-workers now is the time to ask for favors. However, when Hans Moleman asks to get a broom rebristling, things become graphic. Believing that he’s actually the Lucky Charms leprechaun, Mr. Burns tries to steal said charms by drilling a hole into his skull. We don’t actually see the gruesome moment but there’s little left for interpretation. Is Hans going to be alright? Well let’s just hope he knows a good brain surgeon.

#3: God Strangles Homer

Also in:

Top 10 DARKEST Simpsons Moments

“Treehouse of Horror XXII”
You know things have taken a turn for the worst when God himself has arrived to kill you. During “Treehouse of Horror XXII” Homer tricks Ned into thinking he’s hearing the voice of God. And with that, he manipulates Ned into killing anyone he pleases. That’s pretty violent on its own, but the most violent moment is arguably when Homer gets what he deserves. After trying to burn a bible, the Lord descends upon Springfield to strangle Homer to death. We don’t often see God’s wrath evoked so literally but Homer kind of had this coming.

#2: Homer Falls Down the Springfield Gorge

Also in:

Top 10 Times Homer Simpson Got What He DESERVED

“Bart the Daredevil”
When Bart tries to skateboard across the Springfield Gorge, Homer stops his son. It’s a rare moment where he’s actually doing some okay parenting. Unfortunately, not realizing he’s on the skateboard, he ends up accidentally going across the gorge himself. To no one’s surprise, he doesn’t make it across and falls to the bottom, hitting nearly every jagged rock on the way down. Just when you think things couldn’t get possibly worse, the ambulance he’s put in immediately crashes into a tree causing Homer to fall down the gorge a second time. Still, this is a better outcome than when Homer decides to cannibalize himself in “Treehouse of Horror XXVIII”.

#1: Frank Grimes’ Death

Also in:

Top 10 Jason David Frank Tommy Oliver Moments In Power Rangers

“Homer’s Enemy”
Frank Grimes lived an incredibly difficult life, so when he worked hard and finally got a job at the Springfield power plant, he was certainly surprised to see someone like Homer Simpson work there. He greatly resented Homer’s ability to coast through life and somehow wind up extremely successful. This frustration quickly snowballed into a deep hatred for him. He snaps after failing to show everyone that Homer is a fraud. On an impulse he decides to grab live electrical cables without safety gloves, which turned out to be a big mistake. Shockingly, yet unsurprisingly, he was electrocuted. Perhaps worst of all, even in death he couldn’t get the respect he was seeking while alive.
