How to Install Internet Explorer on Mac Using WineBottler

Apple's Macintosh with OS X continues to increase market share, and much of that growth is attributed to PC users making the switch. While migration is relatively simple, there are some applications that first-time Mac users may wish to use. One such application is Internet Explorer, which owns about 38% of the US market as of May, 2012.

Since Internet Explorer is no longer supported on a Mac, many users have installed virtual environments such as VMWare Fusion, Parallels, or Apple's BootCamp. These can be expensive resource hogs, and not always the best solution.

Using WineBottler from MikesMassiveMess is a simple, free application that will let you run Internet Explorer on your Mac. Here's how.

Steps

  1. You can find it at http://winebottler.kronenberg.org/. It should begin downloading immediately.
  2. Copy both Wine and WineBottler into your Applications folder as prompted.
  3. If you have not done so previously, you can find it on your OS X installation disk. This provides the framework that allows WineBottler to run.
  4. You will be asked if you are sure you want to open the application. Click Open.
    • You may be asked you to restart your computer. Click the restart button. This will not restart your computer, only the emulation.
    • WineBottler will inform you when the prefix installation is complete.
  5. Enter in the URL of your choice, and press Enter.
