December 2012
NEWS FROM WOODROFFE

The PTA’s amazing annual event, A
Taste of Christmas, always signals the
start of the Christmas season and gets
December off to an excellent start. This
year’s was probably one of the best
ever, with a constant stream of visitors
throughout the evening and excellent
performances from our musicians to
entertain the crowds. Year 7 students
also distinguished themselves with a
range of exciting stalls and, of course,
their relentless enthusiasm! Over four
thousand pounds was raised and I
am sure that everyone who was there
enjoyed it.
We now look forward to the Carol
Concert, this year being held at St.
Michael’s in Lyme Regis on Tuesday 18
December. Please note the change of
date.
Woodroffe has an enviable reputation
for music and, indeed, the arts in
general and I am therefore delighted to
announce that we have been chosen
by the DfE to be one of two National
Lead Schools tasked with promoting
and developing Cultural Education. Bids
were invited from National Teaching
Schools and we were lucky enough to
have ours accepted; it is also a sign
of the reputation of Woodroffe’s arts
programme that we were chosen over
a number of very well known schools
across the country.
As is the case with most initiatives
from the Department for Education, the
guidelines are fantastically vague but
there are clearly huge opportunities for
the school in leading this project. We
will be working with the Arts Council’s
‘Bridge’ organization, RIO, whose
remit is to make sure that we have
the facilities and expertise we need to
generate further artistic activity across
the country. It is likely therefore that
we will be put in touch with some major
national projects which otherwise
might have passed us by. Now that
the Specialist Schools Movement is
dwindling and the funding for this drying
up, Lead School Status will allow us to
embark upon a significant period of new
creative activity. A £50k grant will also
help!
Our work as a National Teaching School
has begun to take off this term and we
have been busy working with the other
schools in the partnership in order to
develop ways to share good practice
and thus improve the quality of teaching
both in school and across the region.
Teaching School status has already
given us access to opportunities we
wouldn’t normally have had, including
Research Grants, Staff Training, and
links to other outstanding schools and
I am sure that these opportunities will
continue.
Finally, as the year comes to an end,
I am sorry to say that Woodroffe is
about to lose one its most outstanding
members of staff. Gilly Warr, our
Administration Manager has worked
at the school for twenty-four years
and, indeed, was a pupil here. Anyone
who has had any contact with her will
know of her astonishing efficiency and
her utter commitment to the school,
and Woodroffe will be a poorer place
without her. Personally, I will approach
Christmas wondering what on earth I am
going to do without her to organize me.
Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy
New Year.
RPS
REMINDER
The Woodroffe School Christmas Carol
Concert
Mr J Cullimore, Head of Music would like
to invite you all to come and see all of
the school ensembles singing together
at the school’s festive Christmas Carol
Concert. The Concert will be held on
Tuesday 18 December from 6.30pm at
St Michael’s Church in Lyme Regis.
London Art Trip – Andy Warhol, Ice Skating and Graffiti
On Friday 07 December, Mr Vine, Head of Art and Digital technology, and 35 sixth form students left Dorset for a three day trip
to London.
Day one of the visit saw the group experience the capitals award winning Street Art tour through its vibrant East End. As
well as learning about East London’s incredible creativity, historical and cultural events, the group were taught about the
appropriateness of street art – where and when it can be used and how it can help to rejuvenate run down areas of inner
cities.
The day was followed by visits to a number of independent galleries around Hoxton Square including the ferociously
fashionable White Cube – home to some of the world’s most cutting edge art.
The evening saw the group dine in London’s infamous Planet Hollywood before a trip to the Royal Haymarket Theatre to
watch One Man Two Governors.
On Saturday morning after a typical Londoner’s Full English breakfast, it was off to the Halcyon Gallery where their tour guide
showed the group a number of exciting exhibitions from some of the world’s most prestigious artists. These included works by
Mitch Griffiths, Robert Heindell, Santiago Montoya, Mauro Perucchetti, Lorenzo Quinn and Andy Warhol.
They group also visited ‘Death: A Self Portrait’, a winter exhibition held at the Welcome Collection showcasing over 300 works,
followed by the highly acclaimed photographer Tim Walker’s show at Somerset House. The group stayed at Somerset House
for an hour’s ice skating in the evening.
The final day of the trip was spent in Hyde Park’s Winter Wonderland and Harrods for a spot of Christmas shopping before
returning home.
One Year 12 student said “An exhilarating, whirl wind tour of London’s lively art scene! An overwhelming trip rich with joyful
hurrahs and inspiration a plenty. A huge thank you Mr Vine and the staff for organising the trip”.

Arts Award News
Christmas Crafts in the Shelters
Year 8 students Lottie Rouse and Lauren Boggan planned and ran a Christmas craft workshop in the Lister room on Marine
parade for local primary school children.
The two girls are working towards their Silver Arts Award. For the leadership part of the award they decided they would like to
share their skills with young people.
They organised a wonderful variety of activities from Christmas cards and Origami to showing the children how to make their
own felt Christmas tree decorations.
Year 8 - A Bridge Too Far?
Y8 are just completing a project on
structures and have designed and
tested bridges for their strength by
hanging weights from them
A very noisy and exciting end to the
busy term
Miss Barnes, Head of Design
Technology
Both girls were really pleased with the way the workshop turned out. “It all ran really smoothly, the children enjoyed the activities
and we received some very positive feedback from them.”
Alison Bowskill
It’s a Wrap!
All Year 8 students produced a textile book cover in DT this Autumn. The two best designs from each of the nine groups were
selected.
Students are currently working on a similar design with Fabergé Eggs in Art.
Blitz Alcohol Education Roadshow
On Friday 23 November Year 9 had
the opportunity to explore five sessions
provided by the Blitz Alcohol Education
Roadshow. The initiative is aimed at
reducing antisocial behaviour, providing
alcohol education and in particular how
it can affect your health.
For the first session the students
watched a drama production performed
by the Solomon Theatre Group. The
powerful performance was followed
by a Jeremy Kyle style question and
answer session. The actors remained
in character for this session and Mr
Greenhough, Head of Year 9, was
pleased to see the students interrogate
the actors with poignant and ethically
analytical questions.
The day then progressed with sessions
on the effects of alcohol, sexual health
and the consequences of alcohol and
antisocial behaviour which affect the fire
service – this included hoax calls, arson
and the misuse of fireworks.
Mr Greenhough, Head of Year 9, said “I
was so pleased to see Year 9 approach
all of the sensitive sessions is such a
positive and enthusiastic manor. They
carried out sensible discussions relating
to some very difficult issues whilst still
managing to have lots of fun”.

CCF Taster Sessions
November and December are busy on Wednesday afternoons after school. For six weeks Year 8 students have been coming
along to a series of CCF taster sessions to find out what CCF training is like and what the CCF has to offer them. Despite little
daylight and either rain or freezing temperatures the prospective cadets have thrown themselves into everything with great
enthusiasm.
As with the majority of training, it was planned and delivered by the senior cadet instructors. This year the programme was
very ably led by Cdt. Sgt. Ellie Hayter and her team of Year 11 and 12 instructors. The activities ranged from rigging a sailing
dinghy, learning how to build a shelter and cook in the field, flight simulation, rocketry, camouflage and small unit army
manoeuvres. In January we look forward to officially welcoming those who choose to join.
Major Ruffle, CCF Leader
Congratulation to Lieutenant
Ransome-Williams
It is with great pleasure that the CCF
announces the promotion of Mr Simon
Ransome-Williams to the rank of
Lieutenant. This follows his successful
completion of Royal Navy Advanced
Officer’s course in August. This involved
a week-long qualification course at
the Britannia Royal Naval Academy
at Dartmouth. All of the cadets and
adults in the CCF offer him our warmest
congratulations.
Clothes Show Live 2012 – Fashion,
Textiles and JLS!
On Monday 10 December, I and 39
textiles students from Years 10, 11,
12 and 13 left school at 7am. Our
destination was the Birmingham NEC,
the location for the Clothes Show
Live 2012. After a three hour coach
journey, we reached the venue and
headed straight for the main arena- this
was enormous! 391 exhibitors were
exhibiting everything from makeup,
clothes and shoes, to handbags,
jewellery and magazines. I passed
stalls selling vintage clothes at £5 a
T-Shirt, to deluxe teeth-whitening stands
at £89 for 20 minutes. Rimmel London,
Barry M, Models Own and Helen E
were just some of the big beauty brands
on the floor, their coveted gift bags
filled with products, in a rainbow of
colours. Elle and Company magazine
had stands; I asked these about work
experience possibilities and gained
useful information about websites to visit
and people to contact.
This proves that aside from the
wonderful selection of scarves, shirts,
dresses, jewellery and beauty products,
the Clothes Show Live can also help
with education: there was a section
of the arena dedicated to University
and Colleges specializing in Fashion
and Textiles. I visited many of these,
following Miss Barnes’ advice, and
spoke to the students running them.
This proved invaluable, as the students
talked about what their Universities
were like, and gave great advice on the
courses available.
The fashion show at half past twelve
broke up the day- It was an incredible,
extravagant performance with great
music and dancing, beautiful models
and 230 inspiring outfits! JLS kicked
off the show, and a cast of fantastic
dancers and models followed suit:
twirling and strutting their way down
the immeasurably long catwalk.
Renowned designer Henry Holland and
Stylist Grace Woodward presented the
show, creating a vibrant, exhilarating
atmosphere that stayed with us for the
rest of the day. For those who did not
purchase anything the complementary
goody bag at the exit was a delight. The
whole day was a success. I really felt I
was at the heart of the British fashion
and I am hoping for another trip next
year!
A Visit to the Eden Project for the Year 10 Environmental Science
Students
Mr Loveland, Head of Humanities, Mr Brown, Head of Year 7 and Mr
Thomas, Head of Sixth Form, accompanied a group of Year 10 Geography
and Environmental Science Students to Cornwall earlier this month to visit
the Eden Project.
The trip, which offered much more than just a fun day out in Cornwall, was
introduced into the curriculum to fit into the groups study on ecosystems
which is currently being studied as part of their GCSE course and in
particular investigate the characteristics of a tropical ecosystem.
The group not only had chance to look around the ground layer, they also
experienced the dizzying heights of the skyway in the rainforest biome.
Some students were overheard saying “This looks incredible from up here”
and “I can’t believe a place can be this hot all of the time!”
There was of course a chance to experience a very different set of climatic
conditions on the outdoor ice rink where the skills of balance, control and
moral support were all tested.
Mr Loveland said “A big thank you to the students for conducting
themselves in an excellent fashion all day! Next stop, an investigation into
the Lyme Regis beaches!”

2013 School Production to be the
Biggest To Date
We had an overwhelming turn out for
the Bugsy Malone auditions this term
and although we could not offer a place
to everyone who auditioned we do now
have a cast of 112 students ranging
from Year 7 to Year 12. In addition to
this there will be a backstage crew and
band, so a huge number of the school
will be involved in this year’s show. We
were thrilled to have so much interest
and it is very exciting to be working with
our biggest cast ever. It is also a little
daunting!
Year 7 are Just Crackers About
Christmas
This term Year 7 and Miss Cropp,
Teaching Assistant, have been getting
into the festive spirit by spending
their Wednesday lunchtimes creating
Christmas decorations for the Year 7
tutor rooms. They have enjoyed making
a range of different items such as cards,
tags, banners and baubles. They also
had a demonstration of how to make
Christmas crackers by Dr. Graham and
this week they printed their own baubles
in the Art Department (pictured).
I would like to remind parents that they
have been sent the rehearsal schedule,
consent form and a letter through
Parent Mail. It is very important that you
check your Parent Mail regularly as I
will be communicating with you through
this system, for example letting you
know when your priority booking for
tickets will start. We also have a Bugsy
Malone area on the home page of the
school website, where all the relevant
information can be found.
If anyone can donate any time,
expertise or materials that might help
with things such as costumes, props
and set building we would be very
grateful. Please contact me on acruwysfinnigan@woodroffe.dorset.sch.uk
Rehearsals start in January and the
performance week is week commencing
24 June 2013.
Tackling the Energy Challenge Together! Relevons ensemble le défi énergétique !
The Geography and Modern Foreign Languages departments are currently working on a very exciting project, called SEACS: Sustainable Energy Across the Common Space. SEACS was officially launched in May 2011 and is a three year exchange project
bringing together five partner organisations: three UK local authorities; Devon County Council, Dorset County Council and Wiltshire Council, the French county council of Côtes d’Armor, and the French agglomeration of Lannion-Trégor. SEACS is a €2 million
project selected by the European Cross-border Cooperation Programme INTERREG IV A France – England and is co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund and the five partner organisations. The project will continue until September 2014.
SEACS is about empowering and inspiring people on each side of the English Channel to actively reduce their energy consumption. The aim of the project is to create opportunities to reduce energy demand, implement energy efficiency measures and use
clean/renewable energies. The project will raise awareness on the importance of acting now on climate and energy issues and encourage people to change attitudes and behaviours towards energy usage for the long term. The Anglo-French project will identify
practical measures that lead to sustainable energy use in the cross channel region. This will be achieved by learning from past and existing energy related projects and by jointly creating new initiatives.
Students from the Woodroffe School have formed an Action Group and are working in partnership with the Collège Lucie et Raymond AUBRAC in Brittany. The Action Group consist of Phoebe Rowe, Josh Philips, Aaron Walker-Purse, Rory Kinlan, Jesse Sibley,
Indianna Powell, Sam Norton and Jade Mowlen. The SEACS / EAT team meet every Friday lunchtime and are currently working on a short film about our school using the digital media suite and MFL iPad. The students have created a PowerPoint presentation in
French with photos and video footage to highlight our commitment to environmental action. This will be posted on the shared SEACS webspace (http://www.seacs.info/node/411).
We will also be updating you on the groups progress in future editions of Rough Notes.
Jesse Sibley, Year 8, said “I am really looking forward to working on this project. It is going to be interesting to see how the French tackle the environmental issues. It will be good to use my IT and languages skills together in a way that will really challenge me”.

Staff Leavers
We are sad to say goodbye at the end
of term, to Alison Brightwell, Science
Technician, who is retiring after six years
and Vicky Pearce, English and Drama
GTP student who is moving onto her first
teaching post in Weymouth.
I can Hardly Believe that I am Finally Going to Leave School!
My association with the school goes back many years to when I first joined as
a very nervous eleven year old in the early 1960s. My three daughters followed
me, so I was a parent for quite a while, before I joined the support staff in 1988.
During my time here I’ve worked in a variety of roles. I began as a part-time
Reprographic Assistant before moving on to provide admin support for Ian
Cook, who was Deputy Head at the time, and then the school Bursar, Mr Peter
Rickard. In 1993 I took over as Head’s PA/Admin Manager working for Kerrigan
Redman and on
his retirement in
2003 I started working for the
current Head,
Richard Steward.
I have
all of my very
the contact I’ve
governors, staff
work at the
challenging
immensely
honestly say that
a day when I
forward to
thoroughly enjoyed
different roles and
had with parents,
and students. My
school has been
at times but
rewarding. I can
there has not been
have not looked
coming into work.
We welcome
many visitors to
Woodroffe and
people immediately
pick up on the
warm atmosphere
in the school.
To have worked
here for so many
years in such a
lively, hard working and caring community has been an absolute pleasure.
Exeter Trainees Join the Staff Roll for
Three Months
On Monday 07 January 2013, the
School will be joined by five new
PGCE Trainees to its staff. The five
graduates are all currently training at the
University of Exeter for their PGCE in
Teaching and as part of their intensive
course have to spend three months in a
placement school before moving onto a
second placement school after Easter.
Rachel Salter, Science; Lily Vernon-
Hunt, MFL; Rebecca Heath-Taylor,
Geography; Michael Capone, PE and
Liz Flannery, PE will have a number of
assignments, action plans and reports
to complete whilst in school and will be
assigned to a Personal Subject Tutor for
the duration of their stay. Mrs Culham,
Deputy Head and Trainee Programme
Mentor, will also be working closely with
the group on their performance and
learning experience.
We look forward to welcoming them all
in the New Year.
Music Achievements
Massive congratulations to Sarah Nicholson for obtaining a distinction
in her Grade 8 Tuba syllabus earlier this month. Sarah is now working
towards her Grade 8 in Piano.
Good luck to Dominic Kirtley who is taking his Grade 8 in the Saxophone
on Tuesday 18 December. We look forward to reporting back on this in
the New Year.
Mr Cullimore, Head of Music
We’ve now appointed my replacement, Gemma Keeping, who will take over
from me in January. She is a very experienced administrator and I am sure
she will be a great asset to the admin team. I wish her as many happy years at
Woodroffe as I have had.
A Chocolate Wonderland
On Tuesday 27 November a number of
Year 10 and Year 13 students currently
studying Business Studies as part
of their GCSE, enjoyed a successful
visit to Cadbury’s Chocolate World
in Birmingham. The day was packed
with a number of activities including a
tour of the production line, a visit to the
World’s biggest Cadbury shop where a
vast amount of chocolate was bought,
chocolate tasting and the opportunity for
the students to write their names using a
chocolate pen on a marble table!
This trip always proves a popular part
of the Business Studies programme
and once again I was particularly
proud of the students whom behaved
tremendously throughout the day. I look
forward to going back next year.
Year 7 Pantomime Trip to see Aladdin, Octagon Theatre, Yeovil, Friday 14 December.
Last Friday all of year 7, their tutors, co-tutors and head of year watched a fantastic production of Aladdin. The year group
had been studying the pantomime genre in drama, exploring such conventions as slap-stick, silent comedy, stock characters,
contemporary reference and word play, all of which featured in abundance in this show. One of my favourite jokes featured
the dame showing off because she had ‘lettuce’ after her name…iceberg, rocket and little gem! A particularly hilarious moment
was when Mr Larcombe was asked to shout out ‘Hello Wishee-Washee’ very loudly and then to go up on stage, he ended up
having to lie on his back with a certain piece of underwear draped over his face while someone juggled with fire above him.
He was a great sport and instantly achieved legendary status amongst the year group. Year 7 all behaved extremely well and
maintained the excellent reputation that Woodroffe students have when out of school. They seemed to thoroughly enjoy it, as
did the adults.
Personally I think it was the best panto I’ve ever seen and believe me I’ve seen a few. Oh yes I have!
The staff have argued amongst themselves, in the Staff Room, over which is the best poem; 6th Form students have
spoken to me, and amongst themselves, about poems to which they have an emotional attachment; staff and students have
discussed the poems, and poets that wrote them, in their Tutor groups. This poetry project has created a general buzz at all
Year 8 Author Visit on 14th January
On Monday 14th January the whole of Year 8 will be having a visit from Tim
Bowler, the author. One of Tim’s books is Storm Catchers, which some of the
year 8 students have been studying in their English lessons, so this will be a very
exciting event.
Tim is an internationally renowned author whose work has been translated into
many languages and we are delighted to have secured a visit by him. Tim will
be talking to the children about inspiration for their own writing and also enthusing
them about the joy of reading. He will talk a little about his new book Sea of
Whispers (published 3 January), but he will mainly concentrate on his book Buried
Thunder and the Blade series. This visit will support the literacy work that we do in
school and we hope it will prove a stimulating experience for the students.
To prepare for his visit the students might like to explore what Tim has written
(see below): by reading one of his books over Christmas or looking at his highly
informative official website: http://www.timbowler.co.uk
Afterwards there will be an opportunity for the children to buy a book and get it
dedicated to them and signed by Tim. A dedicated and signed book can provide a
treasured reminder of the day for the students and can act as an extra incentive for
them to enjoy reading.
This is a one-off event and students will need to bring a cheque made out to
‘Serendip’ on the day if they wish to purchase a book directly from the bookstall.
The books vary in price from £5.99 to £12.99 (hardcover). As a indication Storm
Catchers (the book, which some students in Year 8 have been reading in their
English lessons) has a current cover price of £6.99; but I will endeavour to get a list
of prices, that the bookshop has agreed, out on Parentmail after Christmas.
Stop Press
Tim Bowler has just informed me that he will be sending our students a video
message in his January Bolthole Bulletin, which will go live on his website on 1st
January.
I would like to thank all the members
of staff, who contributed their favourite
poem, because without them The
Woodroffe Anthology 2012 would not
have been born. THANK YOU
Huge Congratulations to Year 7 Boys’ Rugby Team
Mr Snowling, Head of PE, was extremely proud of the Year 7 boys’ rugby team this
term as they won the South West and Dorset Rugby Tournament.
PTA
NOTICES
He said “The boys played absolutely fantastically and our A Team demolished
all of the other schools with ease. My congratulations go to the whole team who
have played hard this season, have trained well on Saturday mornings but most
importantly have really enjoyed their rugby.
I must say well done to the PE staff who arranged this tournament in a very short
space of time due to flooding in Dorchester.”
We know it’s the biggest fund raiser
of the year, but this year’s Taste
of Christmas has surpassed all
expectations. We had lots of traders,
masses of shoppers and it was great
fun. The final monies are still coming in,
but it looks like we’ve raised a whopping
£4,000 for school.
Thanks need to go to all of Year 7 for
displaying amazing entrepreneurial
spirit when it came to selling raffle
tickets and running stalls on the night.
Congratulations to 7 JLK and Miss
Kabia who sold nearly £400 worth of
raffle tickets and won the inter tutor
competition and the coveted end of term
party.
200 Club Christmas Winners
Congratulations to Belinda Bawden
(No.18) Nathalie Arnold (No. 46) and Jo
Culham (No. 53) who win cash prizes of
£100, £50 and £25 respectively.
Thank You
A BIG THANK YOU to everyone who
has supported the PTA this term. From
attending meetings, to pouring wine
and endless cups of tea, folding raffle
tickets, sourcing raffle prizes, running
tuck stalls at discos or tombolas at Taste
of Christmas, decking out the hall or
running a marathon, it’s all appreciated
and it all helps. Thank you also to
Deputy Head Mrs Culham who ensures
everything runs smoothly with school.
Happy Christmas from the PTA.
Health and Safety Notices
Gentle Reminder about the Bus Bay
Could you please remember to drop
your children off in the bus bay and not
continue up the drive. As noted in last
month’s edition the drive is extremely
congested in the morning and it is
proving a Health and Safety issue.
Could I also remind you to be mindful
when pulling into the bus bay. The lines
on the road at the bottom of the drive
indicate that the right of way is for the
drivers exiting the school drive and
drivers on Uplyme road should stop/
slow down to make sure there is no one
coming before entering the bus bay.
Thank you.
Students Continuing to be on Site
Early
We are continuing to see a number of
students arriving in school early in the
morning. As noted in last month’s edition
the school is not open to students until
8.30am and accepts no responsibility
for them if they are on the school site
before this time.
Thank you.
Mrs G Sleigh, Health and Safety Officer
Polite Notice to Parents
We are receiving an increased amount
of telephone and email requests to
deliver non-urgent messages and
reminders to students. Whilst we try
to assist, the volume of requests is
increasing and this means that lessons
are regularly being disturbed.
If your child has an appointment or
alternative travel arrangements home,
for example, please can you ensure that
he/she is aware of this before they leave
for school in the morning.
We will of course continue to pass on
urgent messages.
Thank you for your cooperation.
Child Protection Leaflets
The following link to the DSCB website
takes you to a leaflet for parents and
pupils about schools’ responsibilities in
relation to child protection, including the
fact that sometimes referrals are made
Breaking News
Jurassic Coast Banquet at the
Natural History Museum
There is the opportunity for two upper
school students to take part in work
experience with a top catering firm in
London called ‘Moving Venues’
The students will be involved in the
‘behind scenes’ work in the kitchen for
a top ‘A’ list celebrity function which
is being held at the Natural History
Museum on the 6th March. The
preparation will all take place on the
6th and the function will be held on
the 7th March.
The function is to raise sponsorship
for the Jurassic Coast Study centre.
More specific details of the event and
the experience will come through in
the next couple of weeks – but initially
we would like to find two students
who are the most serious about
following a career in the catering
business.
To help us decide who is the most
committed to the project we would like
you to prepare a presentation which
we can film and send to Mr Richard
Beggs who is the managing director
of ‘Moving Venues’. He can then
decide who will be given this fantastic
opportunity.
