Pencil Artist Jeffrey Smart Baisden

This week’s pencil artist is well known in pencil art world, and for good reason. Her name is Jeffrey Smart Baisden, and her color pencil pieces are astounding not only because of the skill and artistic talent they represent, but because of the stories they tell.

Jeffrey Smart Baisden graduated from the Florida State University with a degree in Art Education. Since graduating, she has gone on to win a number of accolades, including the CPSA Award of Excellence, and has been featured in a number of magazines, including American Artist and The Best of Colored Pencil. Baisden has also served on the Governing Board of the Colored Pencil Society of America, making her not only an artist, but also a leader in the pencil art world.

Baisden’s color pencil pieces are realistic renderings of everyday objects; chairs, shoes and spoons to name a few. The level of detail and the accuracy of color she achieves are breathtaking, but it is what is missing in these works that caught our attention. Each piece Baisden creates is completely devoid of human presence, leaving the viewer to wonder about the stories behind these objects and the lives of the people that use them.

Colored pencils are empowering. They are like warriors on the paper landscape.

The comment in the last paragraph refers to a desire for more storytelling. This suggests several comments in the form of questions. Must an artist have a known “style”? Is the sole purpose of art to display the prowess of the artist? If there is a desire to evolve where does an artist begin? Which variables need to change?
