I suspect many folks living around Newstead have encountered this creature under rocks or fallen logs. It’s a Black Rock Scorpion Urodacus manicatus, a widespread species found in the forests and woodlands of eastern Australia.
This one was about 60mm long and was secreted away in a burrow under some fallen wood – waiting no doubt for some unsuspecting prey. According to the Museum of Victoria … “Like most scorpions, the Black Rock Scorpion is a ‘sit and wait’ predator – it sits near the mouth of its burrow and detects passing prey by monitoring the substrate vibrations caused by the movement of the prey.”
Hi, I am a biosecurity and conservation student at the University of Auckland, currently constructing a species risk assessment on this species, and was wondering if you would give me permission to use your wonderful images of this organism?
That’s fine Indigo – thanks for asking
Cheers Geoff
