Gatekeeper Shortly before graduation, Michael secured a role at “Big Four” accounting firm Deloitte as a cyber risk consultant. There, he helps clients build security strategies to defend against data hacking. “Brand image can be torn down overnight from a data breach,” he says. “As e-commerce grows, businesses need protection from individuals looking to exploit weakness in company systems.” Michael chose Emmanuel because of its location in Boston and its proximity to the city’s “big players.” He immediately set his sights on Boston’s leading names in the financial industry. Working with the McCafferty Career Center, he earned a summer internship within the Fidelity Center for Applied Technology (FCAT) division of Fidelity Investments. FCAT, established during the Y2K frenzy two decades ago, is an innovation catalyst that helps clients imagine the possibilities of new technologies such as augmented reality, artificial intelligence and digital currency. “My time there was filled with accelerated learning on emerging technologies and management styles known as Agile and Design Thinking,” Michael says. “One project I worked on was related to keeping information proprietary. GRADUATES OF THIS RESEARCH TEAM have gone on to prestigious master’s and Ph.D. programs in biostatistics, finance and education, research analyst positions at major healthcare and financial institutions and teaching positions at area high schools
Propelled by a $300,000 National Science Foundation (NSF) grant, Associate Professors of Mathematics Benjamin Allen and Christine Sample (above) and an ever-evolving group of undergraduates have studied evolution as a mathematical process using evolutionary graph theory, in hopes the research will aid in the understanding and treatment of cancer, which can be seen as unwanted evolution occurring inside the body. The student and faculty team work side-by-side throughout the academic year and over the summer, and present both locally and across the country. In the past two years, the group was invited to present their work at a conference of the National Institute for Mathematical and Biological Synthesis in Tennessee and saw their findings published multiple times in PLOS Computational Biology.
“Evolution occurs when there are genetic changes in a population over time,” the team explained. “These genetic changes, or mutations, impact an individual’s ability to survive and reproduce. We examined how the spatial structure of a population affects the rate at which mutations accumulate, as well as the balance of weak selection versus neutral drift.”
“The grant proved what we have long known—that the Emmanuel faculty engages students in the very highest levels of scientific research,” Dr. Sample said. “The skills and experience they gain in our labs set them apart in whatever field or career they choose.”

Connector When Felice arrived at Emmanuel College for her new student orientation, she was told she would get out as much as she put in. “Once I started to engage with the program, I knew that EC was the place for me,” she said. She became an orientation leader to help other students feel like they also made the right decision coming to Emmanuel. Idea Man Robert’s interest in the workings of the wider world grew in 2011 as the Arab Spring became international news. “I love history,” he said, “so knowing the history of the states as well as their current affairs made their actions and interactions more interesting.” When he came to Emmanuel and took his first economics course, it gave him a new lens through which to view international relations—and he knew the two disciplines would carve out his ideal career in the business and defense industries. During the summer before his senior year, Robert gained a business strategy internship at Fidelity Investments, where he worked with a team of senior employees to innovate the company’s Workplace Investments solution in efforts to double its revenue. In the fall, Robert interned with the U.S. Department of Commerce, working in the global aerospace and defense sectors. He conducted market research using government databases and import/export statistics and used statistical inferencing to make assumptions about a foreign market. “Ultimately, I had the ‘problem’ of enjoying all my experiences,” he said. “I thoroughly enjoy working in public sectors of law, community development, business and economic growth, as well as creating new ideas and increasing the standard of living for everyone.” After graduation, Robert received a full-time job offer as a financial analyst at Raytheon Technologies. Emmanuel accepts the Common Application and offers two earlyaction deadlines in addition to regular decision. Early action is a non-binding process that provides you with your admission decision sooner than a regular decision.
We regard an Emmanuel College education as a shared financial partnership among you, your family and the College. Our goal is to make college costs as affordable as possible. The majority of Emmanuel students receive some form of support to assist them in their educational journey.
