The Lovers, by Magritte, 1928 and 2020

The original, “The Lovers”, by the Belgian Surrealist Rene Magritte in 1928, is an iconic image of alienation, and the challenge of intimacy or vulnerability. [It is presently displayed at Museum of Modern Art in NYC.]

My girlfriend Susan had a college Humanities class assignment earlier this year, which gave us the opportunity to re-stage it as a photo. This was one of the creative highlights of 2020 for me. It wasn’t exactly my idea, but I’m a long-time fan of Magritte’s work, so I’m happy to pay him tribute (not to mention playing second banana to my own lover, and giving her primary credit).
