It has come to my attention that some of you have forgotten the beauty that is The Goonies. Even worse, some of you have never seen it at all. This is a travesty. The Goonies is one of the greatest movies of all time and I’m going to tell you the 10 most important reasons why you need to watch it right now.

1. Like I said, one of the greatest movies of all time. This isn’t a new or revolutionary opinion of the movie. If you Google it, you’ll come up with dozens of articles as to why this movie is as awesome as it is. Anyone who watched this movie as a kid will feel the nostalgia to watch it again, and anyone who didn’t will wish they had seen it sooner. Everyone should experience the fantastic cast of teen actors and the hundreds of quotable lines from their characters.

2. Everyone loves a classic 80s film. The Goonies came out in 1985, the same year as Back to the Future, The Breakfast Club, The Color Purple, Weird Science, Clue, and Teen Wolf. Those are some classic films, but out of them all, at the time of posting, The Goonies seems to be the favorite among movie fans. Not to mention, that the Steven Spielberg came up with the story.

3. A 16-year-old Josh Brolin is in it. Between Avengers: Infinity War and Deadpool 2, Josh Brolin is all the rage right now. If you’re like me and in the mood for more Brolin, his first film is a great choice. Brolin plays Brand, the tough-guy who’s secretly a softie and is super cute. He spends the movie trying to get the girl and looking out for his younger brother Mikey, who’s played by Sean Astin. Yeah, freaking Samwise Gamgee is in this too.

4. It’s the original Stranger Things. Everyone loves that ragtag group of young teens from the 80s, right? Well, The Goonies is a ragtag group of you teen from the actual 80s who go in search of treasure and end up being chased by a family of crooks. If you’ve ever wanted stranger things with more kids and less Demogorgon, then this is the movie you’ve been looking for.

5. And if you love Barb, let me introduce you to Stef. Stef is The Goonies equivalent of Barb played by Martha Plimpton. Throughout the movie, she gives us such beautiful lines as “I feel like I’m babysitting, except I’m not getting paid,” and “you know your voice is kind of nice when your mouth isn’t screwing it up.” She is an icon worth emulating.

6. The Fratelli family is the team of villains we all deserve. The Fratelli family, consisting of Mama Fratelli and her sons Jake and Francis, is a goofy group, that still manages to feel like an actual threat to the kids in the best way. The real gem is Mama Fratelli played by Anne Ramsay: a take-no-shit kind of woman who is the only reasons her sons can function.

7. It’s a step away from being a horror movie. The Goonies is a comedic and fun movie, though it makes freak out some younger audiences. Between all the jokes, some aspects of the movie are actually pretty scary and wouldn’t feel out of place in a horror movie. In fact, people love to point out the movie’s similarities to the TV and film adaptations of Stephen Kind’s It. Simon Brew from Den of Geek has a great article looking at The Goonies as a horror movie and I recommend checking it out!

8. Chunk, your new favorite. Chunk is, without a doubt, the funniest character and you need him in your life immediately. Played by Jeff Cohen, he’s a clumsy chronic liar and prankster, so obviously, he gets himself into loads of trouble. His sobbing confession of guilt to the Fratelli family debatably the best scene in the entire movie. Almost every line he says worth quoting on a daily basis.

9. All of the kids in general. Talented casts of kids seem to be everywhere now, but none will ever compare to the group of kids in The Goonies. Besides the ones I’ve already mentioned there’s Mouth, so named because of his smart mouth, played by Corey Feldman; Data, the inventor, played by Jonatha Ke Quan; and Andy, Stef’s best friends and Brand’s love interest, played by Kerri Green.

10. We all could use an adventure. It seems like every exciting action movie we get now is either set in space or features a team of superheroes. Now, I love those movies, but it does make you miss the days of adventures like Indiana Jones sometimes. The Goonies is a classic adventure movie filled with missing treasure, a pirate ship, and boobytraps (“That’s what I said boobytraps!”). So grab a bag of popcorn, sit back, and enjoy the nostalgia!

Convinced? You can find The Goonies available for rent/purchase from Amazon Video, Google Play, iTunes, and Vudu.
