- Summary:
-
The work depicts the exploring party of Burke and Wills meeting a group of Aborigines. The party is lead by Burke on his grey horse, Landells on the foremost camel, followed by Wills, Beckler and Becker also on camels. Behind this group are the rest of the party, on camels, horses and wagons in a line winding back through a gully into the distance. Landells, who is given prominence, gestures towards the left of the painting while seemingly conversing with one of the Aborigines, who is gesturing to the right towards the camp where other Aborigines are standing or sitting. The leaders of the party are wearing either dark suits, or the expeditionary uniform of red jumpers, flannel trousers and cabbage tree Garibaldi hats. The Aborigines are cloaked in blankets or fur skins, some are holding spears. They are accompanied by dogs. The camp has two low shelters, and a fire with dead birds and other game on the ground. The meeting is set in a clearing in dense vegetation, with a creek to the left. There are mountains (Mt. Wilson?) in the background left, and plains in the background right.
