Tanabata: The Star-Crossed Lovers' Festival
The story of Tanabata originates from a Chinese legend about two star-crossed lovers, Orihime (the Vega star) and Hikoboshi (the Altair star). As per the tale, Orihime, a celestial princess, and skilled weaver, fell in love with Hikoboshi, a herdsman.
Their love was so profound that they neglected their duties, leading to the wrath of the king of heaven who separated them across the Milky Way. However, moved by their love, the king allowed them to meet once a year on July 7th.
Tanzaku: Write your wish
Tanabata is celebrated with great joy across Japan. The highlight of the festival is writing wishes on colorful strips of paper known as 'tanzaku.' People write their heart's desires on these strips and hang them on bamboo branches, in the hope that their wishes come true.

Apart from this, cities and towns are decorated with vibrant, star-shaped decorations and large, colorful streamers. Parades, live performances, and fireworks form an integral part of the festivities. The cities of Sendai and Hiratsuka are particularly famous for their grand Tanabata celebrations.
