Are you an early career researcher? We’re seeking applications for up to eight College Post-doctoral Associates (CPDAs) to be appointed on or before 1 October, 2024. Applicants should - have a doctorate or the expectation of one shortly and may be graduates of any university, - be employed by the University of Cambridge or an affiliated institution in a post-doctoral research role for the duration of the appointment, - intend to be resident in Cambridge for most or all of their period of appointment. No stipend or honorarium is payable. CPDAs will be selected by reference to their ability to contribute to the intellectual and educational life of the College. In return we offer - access to a shared office space within College, - dining rights and invitations to a number of College events. Deadline for applications: Monday 10 June, 1pm.

Among those celebrating the completion of their studies in the last week was Jennifer Fields (2012), whose battle to reach this point has required the utmost courage and determination. In 2014, Jennifer was at the end of her second year of her PhD in Divinity when she was injured in a car crash which tragically claimed the life of The Rev’d Dr John Hughes, our Dean of Chapel. Jennifer was seriously injured and endured 19 different surgeries, not to mention profound psychological trauma. She needed to intermit a number of times but persisted with her studies, graduating in 2020 in absentia during the pandemic. Last Friday, she was finally able to take part in the graduation ceremony, much to the delight of her proud supervisors and College members. A study co-led by one of our academics, Tomasz Hollanek, PhD, calls for safeguards to prevent unwanted ‘hauntings’ by AI chatbots of dead loved ones.   Dr Hollanek and his co-author, Katarzyna Nowaczyk-Basińska, PhD, are both researchers at the Leverhulme Centre for the Future of Intelligence. ‘Deadbots’ or ‘Griefbots’ are AI chatbots that simulate the language patterns and personality traits of the dead using the digital footprints they leave behind. The study, published in the journal "Philosophy and Technology", outlines three design scenarios for platforms that could emerge as part of the developing “digital afterlife industry”, to show the potential consequences of careless design in an area of AI they describe as “high risk”.   Dr Hollanek said: “It is vital that digital afterlife services consider the rights and consent not just of those they recreate, but those who will have to interact with the simulations”. It was a pleasure to host the 'Shaping Sustainable Events' yesterday, in partnership with @Meet Cambridge. As a College, we have made a commitment to the environment which extends across everything we do including conferences and events.
