Lucky Bay, a five-kilometre stretch of white sand near Esperance, has beaten out Greek beaches, Mexican playas and Hawaiian coves in a “best of” list that includes three other Australian beaches.
Located on Western Australia’s south coast in the Cape Le Grand National Park, about eight hours’ drive from Perth, it’s said to be the beach with the country’s whitest sand.
The World’s 50 Best Beaches list, produced by suncream brand Banana Boat, is voted on by more 750 people, including editors from publications like Forbes and Departures, travel agents, bloggers and many, many influencers.

Queensland’s world-famous Whitehaven Beach, located on Whitsunday Island, landed in fourth place. The beach is known for its seven kilometres of pristine sand that’s almost 99 per cent pure silica, giving it an ethereal glow.
Turquoise Bay – also in WA, and one of the most popular beaches in Cape Range National Park near Exmouth – came in at number 17. It’s a particularly great spot for snorkelling enthusiasts, with hundreds of species of tropical fish calling its reef home.
Another Cape Le Grand beach, Little Hellfire Bay, came in at 28.
