Every day of every month at GQ, we start your morning on Instagram with visual advice on What to Wear Today. But we want to go deeper. Give you the nuts and bolts of how to get the look into your wardrobe. Today we're walking you through how to cop actor Dan Egan's stellar wedding-guest style.

Beach weddings, particularly "destination" beach weddings, can be a sartorial crapshoot. Wear your go-to gray suit, and you might feel a little stuffy for tiki drinks and a late-night taco bar. But go the linen-shirt route and you could veer into dad-on-vacation territory right quick (not to mention be way, way underdressed). Your best bet, as far as we're concerned, is to invest in a high-summer suit (something other than preppy seersucker), and some chill, slip-on shoes (whether leather or canvas), then get a little crazy with the rest. Here are a few rules to guide you.

Hampton Sun SPF 30 Lotion, $36, available at mrporter.com

Don’t get a sunburn the day before the wedding.

You're going to want to soak up the sun as soon as you arrive, which is understandable. Just don't be the guy who ruins all the wedding photos—and your painstakingly curated outfit—with a bright-red face.

Suitsuppply Silk/Linen Suit, $1,000, available at us.suitsuppply.com

Stick with a climate-friendly suit.

No matter how casual the wedding, we still believe a suit is your best choice. Go for a light color and fabric, like linen or cotton, and get it perfectly tailored so it stands up to any wind, sand, and sweat you encounter. (If it's a good wedding, you can count on all three.)

Sandro Duke Shirt, $195, available at us.sandro-paris.com

Remix the rest to work with your locale.

If you really want to get into the spirit of the whole thing, swap out your classic white shirt for something in a bold print. Vacation shirts are having a big moment this summer (if you don't know that by now, hi, welcome to earth) so this is a good time to snap one up.

Soludos Dali Espadrilles, $42, available at soludos.com

But don’t wear flip-flops—ever.

You might not have to wear a tuxedo or even a tie, but you always have to wear shoes to a wedding—and flip-flops don't count. If it's a beach wedding, espadrilles are both respectable and sand-friendly. Just don't slip them off and shake them out in front of the wedding party.
