ALTON, Ill. — A professional powerboat race will debut in Alton later this year, with the weekend-long event is estimated to draw thousands of attendees.

The Formula 1 Powerboat Championship, which stages an annual series of U.S. powerboat races, said Friday it will host an event June 21-23 on the Mississippi River in Alton. The three-day event will include races featuring an array of boats, including F1 powerboats that can move up to 120 miles per hour.

The races are expected to attract more than 20,000 attendees to Alton and generate a $4.2 million economic impact, said Cory Jobe, president and CEO of Alton-based Great Rivers & Routes Tourism Bureau.

“It’s probably the biggest event that the Alton riverfront is hosting in quite some time,” Jobe said.
