Jay-Z’s GS300 Is On Display In Brooklyn

The Lexus GS has not been in production since 2020, but in the four generations over 17 years, the GS was the car enthusiast’s Lexus luxury sport sedan. In 1993, the GS 300 debuted with the legendary 2JZ-GE 3.0-liter inline-6 that put 227 horsepower and 210 lb-ft of torque directly to the rear wheels. The car was popular among journalists and owners, particularly one gentleman out of Brooklyn, New York, a Mr. Shawn Carter, or HOV, as some may know him. 

What’s In A Name?

Everyone else just calls him Jay-Z. Rather ironic that a 24-time Grammy Winner shares his name with the engine in his Lexus. Has that ever happened before?

20 Plus Years Of Mentioning Lexus

On his debut album, Reasonable Doubt, in 1996, Jay-Z had a song called “Dead Presidents II” that had a music video showcasing his lovely “off-white Lexus”. The same GS was referenced in “Can I Live” off the same debut album, and later in the 2009 monster hit “Empire State of Mind” with Alicia Keys. 

Where Can Jay-Z’s Lexus Be Seen?

Fans of the beloved 1993 Lexus GS 300 that is still owned by Jay-Z, can see it in person at the Brooklyn Public Library main branch located at 10 Grand Army Plaza. The car is part of an exhibit at the library called The Book of HOV, showcasing the amazing career of one of the greatest rappers ever to live.

Every generation of the Lexus GS was considered great by automotive journalists, as it was consistently ranked in the top of the best driving sport sedans on the market, often being compared favorably to the BMW 5-Series. In 1998, the second generation GS won the coveted Motor Trend Car of The Year award. Production ended in 2020 with the fantastically wild GS-F, which was powered by the same 5.0-liter V8 that also powers the current IS 500 F-Sport. It goes without saying that the legendary Lexus GS went out with a bang.
