This game's theme song should be a Sonic Boom cover by Crush 40.
I don't care if you hate them, you know in your heart that you want to hear that.

This is what I came up with:

Sonic_the_Needlemouse_by_Willy105.png

It's as close as I could get to the old Sonic designs. Pretty much the same old school design except with a lot more hair.

Granted, the one the Sonic Retro fans designed with the biker shirts are pretty close to the original design too.

Superfans at Sonic Retro were asked to redesign Sonic and this is the design they all fell in love with.

"All fell in love" isn't exactly the truth. But i suppose the fact no one said "Wtf is this kingdom hearts shit" is just as bad.

thought this one was pretty funny-

I think it is. With the exception of a couple of tracks.

Though, the U.S. version is still awesome. It just gets a bad rep. because of the godly Japanese soundtrack.
This. It has great music, including one memorable boss theme...

Work that sucker to death, come on now, work that sucker to death. Work that sucker to death, come on now, work that sucker to death! The war began, earth trembling fear, bold, brainy, and cold hearted.... this just grows closer, little by little, wow, the power he poses... is incredible, he doesn't stand a chance!

Love "Eggman's Voice" (if that would be even appropriate to call it) in this. :D

EDIT: You know, I should really post up my Sonic re-design. I'd either have to find it or re-sketch it, but I'd like to know what you think. It's kinda like a mix of Sonic Unleashed and Sonic Screensaver...

Please please PLEEEEEASE Sega,

Got back to the original Sonic from the JP/PAL Box art. He's perfect.

I don't even care if Needlemouse is Sonic 1 remade in 2.5D a la New Super Mario Bros. That would be JUST FINE.

I kind of prefer Toot Toot Sonic Warrior...

However, A Crush 40 remix could change all that. Not that it'll happen. if this is really a return to OG Sonic the Jun Senoue won't be involved in the OST.

I agree. When they redesigned his look for the Dreamcast, they 'fixed' what didn't need fixing.

I liked when Manic and Sonia started showing up in the Archie Comics. That was silly.

I thought they were only referenced in one Super Special?

That's also the name of Sonic's kids in 15 Years Later, but they're not the same characters, it was just a reference they threw in.

I think Jun Senoue has proved he's more than capable of composing/arranging old school sonic style tracks

The Air (Windy Valley Area 3) - Sonic Adventure
Ocean Palace - Sonic Heroes
Casino Park - Sonic Heroes
Angel Island Zone: SSBB Remix

...but then again I'm a huge JS fanboy. I have a JS guitar pick and signed Crush 40 CD within arm's length right now.

All the tracks in Sonic Adventure 1 still had that "Sega Saturn generation music" feel if that makes any sense. Reminded me of stuff you'd hear in Astal, Guardian Heroes, Nights, etc.

Also glad you wrote this. People just need to calm the heck down! Seriously, I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again… I’ve been a Sonic fan since 1991 and will ALWAYS support the Sonic games. If you made “Sonic goes grocery shopping” I’d buy it and enjoy it.

Keep doin what ya do Sega.

I am a person that have played and enjoyed almost 90% of the Sonic game library. In fact, I love Sonic 06 and Sonic Unleashed with the werehog as well. I found that enjoyable because it’s something new to try on a sonic game. It always annoys me to find those -fans- that complain about the games. SEGA will do a game but it may not be the like for EVERYONE. SEGA said that themselves “We can’t please everyone” and that is correct because there won’t be a game that will make EVERYONE happy. There will be always people who will dislike a game no matter how it is made.
I have been a Sonic fan since he came out on Genesis and I still am and that won’t stop.
Proud Sonic fan darn it! XD

I am glad that its not just a small group of people including myself who think this way. being tired of all the Fan-drama. It seems that ever since Sonic 06 That it started too…a game which i actually enjoy, despite it not being as complete as developers at Sega JP probably wanted.

Really, people just need to wait and play the game before jumping to conclusions. Fans used to be this way, but now everyone likes to go gagging everyone’s necks over weather a new sonic games gonna be good, or suck. Frankly i cant even say that i like games like SA/SA2/Sonic 06 without having someone bite my head off.

I really do hope this blog entry gets some people to just calm down and respect the work that Segas doing here.

As long as they reduce the length of his spikes, arms and legs I'd be moderately pleased with the redesign. I'm so hoping this time they manage make a Sonic game I want to play.
Personally, bring some sort of classic design back

Now this makes me happy, yet worried. It makes me happy because to me it means that it won't be 100 percent classic. It makes me worried because I know a lot of "classic fans" that will be upset because of this.

BTW, gotta love the "For the love of Tikal" bit. :D

I was just about to post about this! Oh sod it, I'll just post the whole thing. Sega's Official "Sonic" blog says:

I’ve been going through all the old comments and forums and I’m pleased to see you’re all excitied about Needlemouse and All-Star Racing. However some of your comments about the former have been, well, disappointing. Not about the game you understand, I’m talking about that rather annoying spectre that haunts the Sonic Community at times, namely the “we’re better than they are” types of Sonic fan.

Specifically in the case of Needlemouse we’re talking about dreaded elistist fan.

Now the vast majority of old school fans are awesome, absoluetly S-Rank superstars – BUT there are those out there that believe that all Sonic games should be for them. Needlemouse may well be going in a classic direction, how much so you’ll have to wait and see – but just because it is it doesn’t give older fans the right to shun, put down or shout down the younger fans. Here’s a good example – it could have been one of several in the comment approvals tray:

“This is great news!”

Good so far…

“Now please you guys, don’t focus group this game with stupid children who have no business playing Sonic. It ruined Sonic Unleashed. Don’t for one second think the Werehog was a good idea guys, because it wasn’t. It was absolutely horrid, and Sonic Team should be ashamed for releasing such trash. Sonic deserves so much better, and so do the real fans.”

I’m getting a bit weary of these elitist “real fan” type of comments, lets ignore the comments about not liking Unleashed, because thats their opinion of the game – which they’re entitled to. Its the start and end of this particular paragraph I’d like to address.

Firstly, Sonic has always been a game with kids at their heart. We’ve all grown up over the last 18 years, Sonic’s focus overall has not really shifted in that time. Yes Needlemouse is (from what we know so far) angled towards the classic, but the statement that “Children have no business playing Sonic” is utter Pingas of the highest order. Especially if you have an email address with your year of birth in it showing you’d’ve been five or six when Sonic 1 came out.

Guys, newer fans like the Sonic X-generation fan or even fans who became Sonic fans with Unleashed are entitled to their opinions – even about Needlemouse. There are fans out there who like Unleashed, and Shadow The Hedgehog and Riders and even Sonic 06. Likewise there are some fans that like Amy, some fans like Big, some Sonic fans don’t even care that much about Sonic as a character and there are those that don’t think the originals games were all that hot.

Just because they’re younger, it doesn’t mean your opinion is better (it doesn’t mean its worse either) and that they don’t know anything, and saying they are aren’t isn’t exactly display the sort of maturity 18 years should’ve accumulated.

Now for the love of Tikal, can we all just get along and look forward to the next update?

Its clear. The direction of this, this and this:

will not be abandoned, and forgotten. Sonic and his shitty little friends are not going away anytime soon. The continued fucking of the corpse of the most abused of all 16-bit icons will never end. The Sonic Cycle reigns supreme.

Needlemouse will be a side project, not a new direction. If it is any good (and lets face it, that's a big if), then we should savour it, as Shadow the Werehog Silver Guntits II is just around the corner.

The problem is they lengthened his spines in the first place because while that clasic Sonic artwork looked great in 2D, it didn't translate as well to 3D, especially in games where you're constantly looking at him from the front or back.

A classic design would work for a strictly 2D game, or a design with some clever tricks (the first Fairly Oddparents game would flip Timmy's hair depending on which angle the camera viewed it from), but for the 3D games, they had to change his design at least a little.

I don't like being told off by PR mouthpieces!
Minus 1 sale, bitch!

unless this turns out to be a good time, but let's be honest, what are the chances of that happening?

It's 80% of the games they play probably have Sonic in the title. I know from firsthand experience as my 17 year old cousin suffers from this syndrome. He plays the game, talks non-stop about them, and goes on to even write fan-fic about it. Needless to say, I keep my distance.

Don't take that blog entry seriously. It's not a statement by SEGA. It's an opinion being posted by a Sonic fan who works at SEGA. He loves the Shadow the Hedgehog. This is his personal site http://sonicwrecks.com/

To point out something amusing about that post, it says that people shouldn't discredit the new fans simply because of when they jumped into things, but if those people can't see a bad game or product for what it is, and will actively ignore the good in favor of the bad, then that's not my problem.

To compare, that's like saying I shouldn't think badly of someone that likes the Phantom Menace, but hates the Empire Strikes Back, just because of the generation they come from. Just because Phantom Menace is new, doesn't mean it's good. It's a shit product, and no one should defend it, or savor a return to it.

What he wrote is an opinion, people need to stop taking it so literally, that's all I'm saying.
I also think it shouldn't of been posted on an official SEGA blog, because it does look like an official SEGA statement.

We heard from Mike Hayes himself that SEGA will be making two types of Sonic games from now on. Games for the Traditionalist and Games for the younger audience, cause as everyone can see, the Sonic fanbase can't agree on shit.

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
ULTROS! is definitely excited for this game.

Will this game be on the PSN/XBLA?

We don't know if it is going to be DL or retail, and the only platforms we know are getting it are PS3 and X360. Nothing more has been announced.

Slightly Live

Dirty tag dodger
The main issues older fans have with modern Sonic games has mostly got to do with Quality rather than Content.

Sonic 06, Shadow et al aren't disliked on the basis of expanded characters or even the fans there of, it's simply that they are poor games. The trend is simply the less time playing as Sonic, the worse the games seem to get.

I'm pretty sure Shadow would have a ton more adult fans if the game itself wasn't a messy pile of poop.

The Air was already one of Senoue's own (and dates back to his best era), I'm fairly certain Ocean Palace is one of Hataya's, Casino Park resembles classic tracks only in that he kept a guitar out of it, and AIZ SSBB added another guitar and then mixed both of them and the drums so loudly that the subtleties and bassline of the music are almost completely drowned out.

The man is not to be let near the series, especially a classic revival, until someone shoots his guitar.

And those fans are bad for Sonic and video games in general. There's absolutely no way to justify Sonic 06 or Shadow the Hedgehog as good games. Not all opinions are equal.

Screw that blog: the younger fans are wrong. They have no idea how much they handicap Sonic's potential.. They're defending Sonic junk food when they don't even realize they could be eating Sonic steak.. They don't even know how good Sonic could be, having grown up since he sucked...!

They think they want a few cute animals in a mildly interesting 3D game world. I can see how they think you'd be losing something by going back to Sonic by himself running in 2D.. "That sounds like "less" right? Those boring old fans want to take away my silly fun!" But those mere trinkets they love are a cheap diversion and they don't even realize that Sonic is capable of very solid gameplay fun. It's why he's even around to begin with. Crap furry mascots with bad gameplay don't sell in million dollar videogames for 20 years.. If this current direction for Sonic had been there from the beginning, he would have died out in the 90s along with Bubsy.

I see how the classic fan mantra of "kill the 3D and the shitty friends" would step on the toes of those who think that's what Sonic is.. But it's not like we're opposed to 3D/friends just because it's different from the old ones.. We don't want them gone because of nostalgia. It's because we know from 10 years of history that those things tend to completely negate the type of fun and gameplay style that old Sonics had.

Ignore these youngins.. They know not what they do.

In 5 more years when the kids that played shadow and 06 get older, do you think they will want classic style Sonic? Unfortunately of course not. They want what they grew up with. I don't think we will ever see Sonic go back to hi roots, but I am just hoping that all future games use the best of past games, and make it better. It sounds like it's a no-brainer, but this is Sega. :(
