It’s getting hot out, and that means two things: Outdoor dining is once again an option, and using your regular oven is about to become unbearable, especially for high-temperature jobs like baking and broiling. This season you can now take the oven outside with the Ooni Volt 12, the latest in the company’s line of portable outdoor pizza ovens. Or—and hear us out—you can keep it inside after all, without filling your home with hot air and smoke. That’s because the insulated Volt 12 is Ooni’s first electric unit, which means you can cook an amazing pizza anywhere, any time of year, indoors or out.

The Ooni Volt 12 is ready to use right out of the box—just plug it in, flip the switch, and make delicious pizza. But before you get cooking, we recommend you take a minute to decide what you’re in the mood for, so you can set up in the ideally complementary setting: the patio for that alfresco margarita pizza when the sun shines or the kitchen for the hearty stuffed pizza on a rainy day.

Temperature Control

The Volt 12 uses twin heating elements to cook food evenly by automatically distributing heat on the top and bottom. (You can opt for preset levels or use manual control to bake as high as 850° F, matching the top temp of commercial pizza ovens.) Tweak the heat sources according to your masterful pizzaiolo instincts using the temperature and balance dials, so the toppings and crust finish cooking at the same time. Once the oven is up to temperature (it takes only about 20 minutes to reach its maximum), you’re just 90 seconds from your favorite pie.

Between batches, the Volt 12’s boost function returns the 13-inch baking stone to the optimum temperature for a crispy crust without an overcooked top within 45 seconds. That means you can pull hot pizza #2 out before everyone at the table is finished the first one. Plus, the oven has a built-in timer dial and shuts off automatically after 45 minutes for safety and to save electricity for absent-minded cooks.

And you can use your Ooni for a lot more than just round pies. Try your hand at different styles, like pan, Chicago deep dish, or Detroit-style, or bake delectable desserts . . . the possibilities (pizzabilities?) are truly endless.

Stylish Engineering

Of course, we know the design is half the thrill, so let’s take a minute to ogle the engineering at work here. The most energy-efficient oven Ooni has ever made features an insulated cooking chamber with a powder-coated steel shell—this is what lets you cook indoors in warm weather without turning your kitchen into a sweatbox. Its triple-paned window traps heat behind a double-vacuum wall—but chefs can still peep inside to see the perfect moment to pull the pizza.

Portability & Storage

While the Volt 12 is weather-resistant and you can buy an outdoor cover as an accessory, Ooni recommends storing the oven inside—just let it cool down first to avoid burning yourself. Since it’s easily transportable, at 39.2 pounds with built-in handles, you can really stow it anywhere you like. And imagine how popular you’ll be at parties, now that you can bring along the means for unlimited pizza instead of just another six-pack.
